Local Knowledge
Purple Sea Urchins are commonly found in surf zones on the west coast. They feed primarily on kelp and algae. Due to overhunting in the late 1800's, their main predator & keystone species, the Sea Otter has been absent from the food chain, and as a direct result, populations of Sea Urchins have increased. This has led to what is known as kelp barrens, where veritable armies of Urchins consume entire kelp forests in swaths.
