3 Day Sea Kayak Trip Itinerary

DAY 1
12:00 am- Our guides greet you in Tofino at our designated meeting place. After safety instruction & paddling techniques from the lead guide, we navigate our way to Vargas Island for our first night stay. We are greeted by our hosts Marylin & Neil Buckle and after a tour of the property we are free to explore or catch up on some reading before dinner. Enjoy a glass of BC wine and watch as your guide prepares a meal inspired by local ingredients like Dungeness Crab or wild BC Salmon. Traditionally, we finish our first day with a wood-fired beach front sauna & evening swim before retiring to our rooms.

DAY 2
Breakfast burritos & morning coffee while looking at the chart and checking the weather with the guide. Before setting out, your guide will give further instructional talk about surf launch & landings. Watch for seals & sea lions along the rocky shores and reefs on the outer coast of Vargas Island, as well as rare seabirds. Practice your new skills when arriving on Medallion beach for a pic-nic style lunch. An opportune time for a beach hike, intertidal exploring and photos of the dramatic Pacific coastline. Arriving back at the Lodge before our wild west coast dinner allows for some quality alone time or a refreshing hot cleanse in the beach front shower house. We complete our final night with another wood-fired sauna on the beach and swim under the stars.

DAY 3

Early coffee on the beach and another satisfying breakfast prepares us for a morning paddle. We watch for the commonly seen deer, wolf or black bear foraging for crabs in the silence of the morning while gliding past kelp forests along the calm inlet passage to Meares Island. We hike the 'Big Tree Trail' through the giant ancient Cedars of the temperate old growth rainforest before returning back to civilization in the little fishing village of Tofino from where we first departed. After packing the gear & kayaks, we walk downtown for lunch and have an opportunity to experience some Tofino culture.

Ancient Cedar in old growth temperate rainforest, Clayoquot Sound, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Local Knowledge

Purple Sea Urchins are commonly found in surf zones on the west coast. They feed primarily on kelp and algae. Due to overhunting in the late 1800's, their main predator & keystone species, the Sea Otter has been absent from the food chain, and as a direct result, populations of Sea Urchins have increased. This has led to what is known as kelp barrens, where veritable armies of Urchins consume entire kelp forests in swaths.
