BROKEN GROUP Graveyard of the Pacific

The Broken Group Islands (BGI) is one of the most famous sea kayaking destinations in the world, unmatched for its natural beauty and diversity of wildlife.

This unit of the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, on Vancouver Island, has much to offer kayakers. The inner islands have sheltered waters with quiet lagoons. The outer islands are exposed to the open ocean.

As a wilderness area, the Broken Group Islands brim with life. A wide variety of intertidal critters, marine mammals, land mammals and birds live in this archipelago of over 100 islands. This area is a popular summer feeding ground for the once endangered gray and humpback whales. Sightings are common.

Although kayaking is the main activity in the BGI, tidepooling, exploring the islands, and wildlife viewing will enhance your experience. The numerous beaches, the lush forests with giant western red cedar trees, or the entertaining sea lions will all add to your enjoyment.

This paradise has also a rich human history dating back more than 5000 years. Signs of First Nation occupation are still evident.

4 Day Broken Group Itinerary

DAY 1
7:00 am- You are greeted by our guides in Ucluelet at our designated meeting place. We travel to our launch site in Toquart Bay. We unload our gear and kayaks just outside of the National Park reserve and take some time for a safety orientation and paddling instruction. We then paddle through some of the Islands enroute to our campsite for the evening.

DAY 2
An early morning breakfast prepares us for a big day of paddling amongst the many Islands that make up the Broken Group. We paddle past sea arches and sea caves, and explore intertidal zones teeming with life. Always on the look out for marine mammals including seals, sea lions and porpoise. We complete each day of paddling with an expertly prepared gourmet meal enjoyed on the beach.

DAY 3
Another early morning breakfast and locally roasted coffee before donning our kayaking gear and exploring more of the islands. We learn about First Nation history and culture and witness some evidence of their presence in the form of ancient fish traps. We also learn about some more recent history and why it is called the graveyard of the Pacific.

DAY 4

Our final day is spent with a morning paddle to our launch site. After packing the gear and kayaks, we will travel back to Ucluelet to our original meeting place.
